Conchita Wurst joins Stop Homophobia campaign: When did you decide to be straight?

Austrian singer Conchita Wurst is known not only for her spectacular Eurovision Song Contest win and her amazing style, but also for her outspokenness when it comes to human rights for everyone, but particularly for those who are in the LGBT community.

So, it’s no surprise to see Conchita join the ‘Stop Homophobia’ Enough is Enough campaign currently being run in Europe with the slogan “Wann hast du entschieden hetero zu sein?” or in English “When did you decide to be straight?”

After all, it’s just a quick question to the bigots and homophobes who always accuse gays and lesbians of ‘choosing’ to be gay.

Which always leaves me asking “Seriously?” With all the discrimination against homosexuals still alive and well today all over the world, why would anyone actively CHOOSE to sign up for that kind of abuse?

You can find out more about the ‘Stop Homophobia’ campaign at the Enough is Enough website. You can also download the ‘Stop Homophobia’ button there, and add your voice to the voices of those of us who are sick of seeing gays and lesbians being discriminated against, and so are opening our mouths to say so.

Personally, I think it’s an extremely powerful campaign, as it’s simple yet cuts right to the chase.

Why I had Conchita Wurst’s beard tattooed on my arm this week

Plus, with the internet being such a good vehicle for spreading the message, campaigns like this go viral in no time.

A far cry from when I was first involved in gay rights campaigns back in the 1990s and the only thing we had at our fingertips was the US mail service. Talk about spreading the word…….sloooowly.

And, of course, a big thank you to Conchita Wurst for adding her face and name to this and for ‘opening her mouth’, as she has the type of impact most of us can only dream of.
