Austria Airlines to resume flights to Tel Aviv – but ceasefire deal now delayed

Michelle Topham January 16, 2025

According to the Lufthansa Group, Austrian Airlines will resume flights to Tel Aviv, Israel beginning on February 1st, 2025.

The same goes for other members of the Lufthansa group Austrian Airlines is a part of, with carriers Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and Swiss all announcing they will be resuming flights to Israel.

Austrian originally suspended all flights to Tel Aviv, along with flights to Erbil and Amman in April last year, after tensions between Iran and Israel escalated.

The decision to resume flights to Tel Aviv this month comes after a ceasefire between the Israeli government of Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas, the designated terrorist organization that governs Gaza, was announced earlier in the week.

However, news this morning seems to suggest that ceasefire may be delayed or even cancelled, after Israel announced Hamas has already broken the ceasefire deal just days after it was agreed upon.

According to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office, Hamas is now trying to back out of the ceasefire deal by trying to “extort last minute concessions”. (Is anyone surprised?)

Due to that, a scheduled vote in the Israeli cabinet to ratify the ceasefire will not be taking place today.

No announcement has yet been made by the Israelis as to what that ultimately means, or what needs to be rectified by Hamas in order for the vote to go ahead.

It remains to be seen then whether Austrian Airlines will still resume flights to Tel Aviv beginning on February 1st, or if that will be put off until things settle down again.
