Vienna’s Main Public Library (Hauptbücherei Wien) is located right above the Burggasse-Stadthalle U-bahn station. Directly above the public library are cafes which partially look out over the Vienna “Gürtel, one of the city’s busiest roads.
The view from the Hauptbücherei Wien, though, is what I wanted to see today so, after lunch at a cafe in the rotunda above the library, I stepped out onto the tiny terrace to take photographs of the view. Because, yes, the view from the Hauptbücherei Wien is awesome.
Of course, it currently being the middle of winter here in Vienna, and a quite brutal -8C, taking photographs was limited to around one minute before I felt like my fingers were about to fall off and I had to go back inside.
During that minute, however, I did manage to get this lovely photograph of the view from the Hauptbücherei Wien — out over Burggasse-Stadthalle station.
Just look at those amazing architectural pavilions and those lovely red trams below.
If you want something a little bit away from the usual tourist traps the next time you are in Vienna, I recommend a trip to the Hauptbücherei Wien, aka Vienna’s Main Public Library, a coffee in one of the cafes and a wander around the terrace to take some photographs. Climbing up those steep steps takes a couple of minutes, but it is well worth it when you get to the top.
And if you want to check out the library while you are there, as it has some killer views as well, it is open Monday through Friday from 11am to 7pm, and Saturday 11am to 5pm.
